You’re using social media to share content from the show. You share podcasts, topic ideas discussed on the show, characterizing photos of your show players. Your P1s are thoroughly entertained because they can’t get enough of the show.
But does this do anything to attract new listeners?
Imagine you see an old friend at a party. You’re chatting with her and several people you’ve just met. You chat with your old friend about that time you almost got arrested in college, and about how you both had the biggest crush on your high school gym teacher. You share inside jokes and old stories in front of your new acquaintances- alienating them, excluding them.
Sharing P1 content on your social media accounts can be alienating to the potential or new listener.
To super serve P1s and attract new listeners, add demo-relevant content to the mix. Share stories, articles, pictures, videos that appeal to the interests of your audience. Potential listeners will see that you talk about topics that interest them, which is more likely to encourage tune ins than content that makes them feel like outsiders.
At this year’s Morning Show Bootcamp, Bobby Bones from The Bobby Bones Show talked about a video series he created called “Captain Caucasian”, targeted at the potential, not P1, listener. The idea was to make a video that would be entertaining to the target demo, regardless of whether the viewer had ever listened to the show.
For example, this video called “Readin’ Dirty” features Captain Caucasian (a character played by Bobby Bones) rapping about Fifty Shades of Grey. The video is hilarious, and appeals to women in the demo who have read or heard about the book. If I saw this video and had never heard the Bobby Bones Show, I would tune in, because he is clearly entertaining!
Now go get busy creating content to gain new listeners!
